Read the headlines and you get the impression that bed bugs have invaded our shores in force and are chomping their way down Main Street USA. Until five years ago bed bug reports were virtually non-existent in the U.S. Then the blood-sucking insects started cropping up in homes, apartments, hotels and college dorms across the country fueling a media frenzy. Chastising fellow journalists, David Segal of the Washington Post pointed out in a February article, "more than 400 articles have wriggled into print, all making roughly the same point: The bloodsucking critters are back, and in numbers that amount to a scourge." Segal claims that "the scale of this 'swarm' has been overstated, maybe wildly so. ... 'The bugs are back' is so perfect a trend story that it seems hand-forged by the trend-story gods. It's what happens when you combine a creepy villain, primal fear and squishy statistics."
Media Plus
Bed Bug Invasion - Fact or Media Frenzy?
In the March issue of Pest Management Professional, editorial director Frank Andorka made this rebuttal to Segal's story: "Of course, many reporters are rooting for the bed bug: It's great copy - a cryptic, bloodsucking insect that feeds on people when they are sleeping and is difficult to control. What could possibly be a better story than that? But just because it's good copy doesn't mean the stories aren't true."
Bed Bug Invasion - Fact or Media Frenzy?
So what's the real story? Are bed bugs a genuine threat or is this so much media hype. Some argue that journalists are feeding the frenzied paranoia of a panicked citizenry. Others point to very real statistics that show a 70% increase in reported bed bug infestations in the U.S. in the past five years. In a national survey conducted for Pest Management Professional, University of Kentucky entomologist Michael Potter found, "A whopping 91% of respondents reported their organizations had encountered bed bug infestations in the past two years. Only 37% said they encountered bed bugs more than five years ago." Pest control companies that for decades had received no calls about bed bugs are suddenly receiving dozens. In large urban areas it's not uncommon for companies to field 100 to 150 bed bug complaints a week, according to a National Pest Management Association survey.
After near eradication by DDT-based pesticides in the 1950s, bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are on the rise. A worldwide scourge throughout human history, bed bugs, fleas and lice used to be regular nightly bedmates. Your grandmother's bedtime mantra -- "Sleep tight; don't let the bed bugs bite!" - was rooted in the reality of pre-World War II life when bed bugs were commonly found in beds across the U.S. In the 1930s, people wallpapered their bedrooms with arsenic-laced wallpaper to kill bed bugs. Metal bed frames, considered less likely to harbor bed bugs, were the rage. Twice a year bedsteads were completely dismantled and scrubbed to keep bed bugs at bay. Until the insect-killing properties of DDT were discovered during World War II, no effective pesticide existed to eradicate bed bugs. Development of DDT-based insecticides after the war allowed America and most industrialized countries to stamp out bed bugs.
Discovery of DDT's cancer risk to humans and lethal threat to wildlife led to its banning in the early 1970s. By the mid-1990s, reports of bed bug infestations began to surface in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Western Europe. With no lethally effective pesticide available, bed bugs have multiplied and spread. "Since the mid-1990s, numbers of reported infestations have almost doubled annually," said Clive Boase, author of a bed bug study published by the Institute of Biology in London. Bed bug infestations in London have risen tenfold since 1996, Boase reported. According to National Geographic News, bed bug complaints to pest control companies increased 700% in Australia between 2000 and 2004 and 500% in the U.S. While these figures seem astonishing, keep in mind that if a pest controller received two bed bugs calls in 2000, an increase of 500% would equal 10 calls in 2004, not quite the "invasion" trumpeted in news reports. Still, last year bed bug infestations were reported in every state in the U.S., and reports are increasing exponentially each year. "This is a serious issue," Potter recently told the New York Times. "This will be the pest of the 21st century."
Scientists haven't pinned down a single cause for the bed bug proliferation, but cite a combination of factors, including the increased ease of international travel, lack of potent insecticides, and discovery of pesticide-resistant bed bugs. The size of an apple seed, these wingless insects are nocturnal, hiding in tiny cracks and crevices on mattresses and near beds, and coming out at night to feed on human blood. Females typically lay 500 eggs during their six- to 12-month lifespan. Eggs hatch in four to 12 days, and larva begin to feed, reaching adult status in about a month. Three or more generations can be produced in a year. A few bed bugs can lead to a major infestation in just a short time. Easily transported, bed bugs often enter a home on luggage, clothing or used or rental furniture. They spread through multi-unit properties like apartments and hotels through air ducts, electrical and plumbing conduits and wall voids. New York City recently launched an education campaign when serious bed bug infestations in the immigrant community were linked to the sale of infested secondhand mattresses.
Not all bed bug complaints turn out to be bed bugs. "I get samples every day," said Harvard University entomologist Richard Pollack, who noted that "fewer than half" turn out to be bed bugs. Carpet beetles, lice, fleas, ticks, chiggers, mites, even lint are often mistaken for bed bugs. False alarms are part of the territory, said New York City housing authority spokesman Howard Marder. "Experience shows that residents may have heard rumors about bedbugs, so if they wake up with a rash or an itch, they think they've got them. ... If you make people aware of a problem, reports about it are likely to go up."
Sometimes the power of suggestion results in delusory parasitosis, or Ekbom's Syndrome, in which real environmental elements such as static electricity or dry skin cause severe itching that is incorrectly perceived to be caused by insects. Scratching can cause bleeding welts that only serve to "validate" victims' claims of an insect infestation. Most incidents are related to seasonal changes in humidity triggered by the start up of heating or air conditioning systems.
For those who actually do have bed bugs, the experience can be traumatic. Bites leave red, itchy welts that can bedevil bed bug victims. While scientists assure us that bed bugs are merely a nuisance pest and do not transmit diseases, the thought of being nibbled on while they sleep is enough to send many victims screaming from their beds. "It's horrible. They're feeding on your family, your skin; their main meal is a human body," a horrified Atlantic Beach bed bug victim told NBC 12 First Coast News in Jacksonville, Florida. She said her two-year-old would wake up crying from the bites. Shannon (who refused to give her last name) spent hours shuttling her welt-covered children to different doctors before an entomologist correctly diagnosed the problem as bed bugs. In a typical reaction, Shannon threw out mattresses, beds, sofas and linens. She moved her family out and hired a pest control company to "tent" and fumigate their house. New technologies like Cryonite which freezes and kills bugs and eggs using non-toxic carbon dioxide vapor can be applied without going to such extremes. But when bed bugs bite, most people panic. They don't care whether there's a bed bug invasion sweeping America or not. One bug in their bed is one too many.

The term 'space ad' is marketing jargon for advertisements placed in media page space sold by any publisher. This category includes everything from newspaper classifieds to multi-page spreads in national magazines.
Media Plus
Advertising Writing Tips And Strategies - Squeeze Top Performance From Your Ads In All Media
I have ongoing conversations with my local business community about space ad experiences. The casual data reveals ad response is quite variable. Some business owners report good to excellent results. Yet others say their advertising is consistently disappointing. Poor results often follow from the same basic mistakes.
Advertising Writing Tips And Strategies - Squeeze Top Performance From Your Ads In All Media
Do you consider yellow pages ads a basic necessity of doing business these days? What about newspapers and magazines? Even if you don't currently buy these media, read on anyway -- because you'll learn tips that make even inexpensive advertising pay off, from signage to the internet.
If you're wasting money on ads, you can turn that around and make space ads work hard for you.
If your ad spending is already justified by results, you can punch up the response by using the tricks of the trade revealed below.
How Well Do You Relate To The 'Sad Ad Story?'
Let's say, as an example, you decide to buy a yellow pages ad. You can pick from optional sizes and features. Perhaps you're tempted to buy a bigger or fancier ad or premium placement. You hope for at least the average response stated by the directory company, though past performance makes you skeptical.
Many companies place listings in several different versions of yellow pages that cover their markets. If your competitors advertise in directories, you may not want to be left out. Small newspaper or magazine ads deliver relatively low cost promotion, but they are usually 'anytime ads' as opposed to the riskier yearly directory commitments that can't be changed. This may make you anxious.
You expect the media you buy to deliver results. But after the directory is distributed, you don't get many phone calls. You may fear your competitors are getting all the response. You may feel disappointed, or sad, or angry about wasting advertising budget. Many folks I poll feel this way.
Yet when the yellow page reps contact you about next year, you go ahead and re-order because your choices for basic, low cost advertising are limited. Or maybe you give up in frustration and just go with the minimum listing that comes free with your business phone line. That's lost opportunity if your target market uses yellow pages.
It gets worse. You may have the same disappointment with newspaper or magazine ads. You might ask, "Is there no way to win the ad game? Do space ads ever work for anyone? How can I get a decent return on my investment?"
Year after year, newspapers, magazines and yellow pages keep publishing millions of ads. Though the internet is taking over, good print ads continue to work very well. You'll soon see that disappointing results are not inevitable and not really the publishers' fault. Though most media will freely allow you to run ads that generate poor response. They make the same money whether your ad performs or not.
Winning In The Ad Game
Space ad performance dramatically improves when you're willing to take full responsibility for results and be creative enough to look beyond the publishers' free layout options. You can even avoid extra cost or even pay less for ads that get higher response than the ones you've been running. Better performance may be possible from smaller ads than you usually buy. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
First, a little background about the space ad business. This will help you get a grip on how this industry works and illustrate why you need to go some extra distance in your ad program management and composition -- if you're serious about getting good response that justifies the cost.
Space advertising is a volume operation. Publishers have a fixed amount of page area to sell. To maximize profits, they sell and fill space as efficiently as possible, using a limited set of standardized layouts plus a few optional features. They run internal sales and creative production teams lean. That's just good business.
Many publishers offer free ad composition to make their deals more appealing. Free options are based on visual presentation only, like size, color, page position, placement of visuals, trim, web site addresses or logos, and so on. As a rule, little to no creative effort goes into what your space ads are saying in words to your market, which is called 'the copy.'
Free space ad composition is the fast food of the advertising industry.
"Would you like that with a red border?"
Everyone who buys into a directory has access to the same menu of pre-cooked, ready-in-minutes, visual options. You need to create impact. You need more.
The Secret Of Effective Space Ads Is Copy That Sells
What you really need is a way to distinguish your ad, to make your message more powerful. The way your ad is written makes all the difference. Great copy makes a visually plain ad more appealing and effective than others in your category that have lousy copy or no copy, which is all it takes to make the wheels fall off. It's your sales message that entices people to ring your phone or visit your store, rather than calling or visiting your competitors. Visuals surely matter, but they usually can't deliver a persuasive sales message all alone. Take visuals out of an ad that has powerful copy and it still sells. To power up your ads, make sure the copy sells effectively.
Large, expensive, highly produced ads from big fancy agencies come from creative teams that include a skilled writer who specializes in couching sales messages in potent copy. Free ad layouts are not a good deal if persuasive copy is missing.
Take a close look at any ads you've run, or planned. Also scan the yellow pages, magazines, and newspapers with a critical eye. For each ad, ask key questions:
* What is the selling message and how is it stated?
* If you were a customer, would this ad motivate you to phone or visit?
* Do you see a corny cliché, slogan, or empty claim, but no real selling?
* Does the message rely on hype or exaggeration?
* Does the ad try to be funny but end up silly, stupid, and insulting?
* Is there no selling copy at all, just an oversize listing or extra white space?
* Ask "So what?" to every statement in the ad. Is the copy relevant?
You'll soon see patterns of wretched ads for yourself. Often an ad is dominated by a company name and logo, when actually an ad reader couldn't care less. They have an issue. They seek a solution. They don't care about you. Unless you're running a brand awareness campaign, ads should sell product, not market brand. An ad can only do one thing and do it well.
If your prospect is looking in a directory, they have already decided to buy or at least investigate a solution. Ads that address what they really want will pull response. It's not about you or your company. In their minds, where your battle for position is fought, it's all about them. So you must set your ego aside and put their concerns first if you mean to win.
A Comparative Example
1. A full page 'ad' for a car dealer splashes their name and the car brand they sell across the top. Next you see a few pictures of new cars and trucks, in the middle. Contact information, location, and business hours appear at the bottom. The phone number is printed large. That's it. No copy.
I really saw this ad in my local yellow pages. Then I remembered -- this dealer's cars sit on his lot for months. The entire lot is wholesaled periodically because the inventory doesn't turn. When times are tough for car dealers, pseudo-ads don't help.
2. A much smaller car ad has a curiosity-tweaking headline up top:
What Do You Want Most From A Car Dealer?
Makes you wonder what they're talking about. So you read further. Then this ad states some very desirable benefits:
* Invoice-plus firm quote up front on any car we sell
* Drive any inventory car away in 30 minutes or less
* All factory options available by special order
* Delivery available within the continental US
* No car salesman tricks. Guaranteed.
Then appear a few car photos, brands, logos, etc., and contact info and business hours.
Then a free offer --
Each buyer is entered to win free routine maintenance for a year!
Which ad would you respond to?
I know a man who bought an Audi A6 through an email ad like this one, over the internet. He's delighted with his purchase experience and the car they delivered, right on appointment. They kept their word in every way. He says he's theirs for life, and he buys a new high-end car every couple years.
Put A Message That Sells In Your Ads -- Step By Step
The basic principles of all present day advertising were discovered experimentally and described by the 'Father of Modern Advertising,' Claude Hopkins, during the 1920's, in his classic book, Scientific Advertising. Hopkins is to ads as Edison is to electric lights. He followed classic scientific method to discover what works. You can still find his book in print today because it's still in wide use.
Even a small space ad can achieve impressive sales when composed along the lines Hopkins set forth. His principles have consistently brought results. They have been validated in practice during subsequent decades of advertising. Unfortunately, mass marketing with free composition typically leaves no possibility for classical effective ads because the selling message itself becomes a casualty.
Selling is a stepwise process. A distracting field of dense information surrounds your ad and your reader, so first your ad must capture the readers' attention. Then it must develop their interest in reading further. Once it has their attention and interest, your ad has to create desire -- make them want what you're selling. Then it must motivate them to take some action, like write a check, pull out a credit card, call you on the phone for more information, or visit your location.
This process unfolds in stages familiar to everyone who sells, yet many business people forget to insist that a selling progression be carried off successfully by their space ads.
You can only say a few things in an ad that are relevant to buyer interests. Most, if not all, of the following items should be present. The order shown works well. Tell your readers --
* What unique value you provide
* What you do
* When, where, how and/or why you do it
* Who you are
* Why you're the best source
All else is folly if it doesn't help make the sale. Less is more. Keep it sparse to concentrate attention on your selling message and your desired reader response.
What's In A Real Ad
Here are six structural elements for an ad that will make your phone ring and bring people into your store by moving them through an organized selling process to the buying decision.
1. A headline that grabs the readers' attention and makes them want to read the rest of the ad. Put a benefit here, not just a name, brand, or logo.
2. Selling points that clearly demonstrate value. These emphasize benefits and may back them up with features of your product or service. If your target is a technical crowd, hobbyists, or enthusiasts, features will dominate. These folks already know the benefits. They want all the little details.
3. Differentiation that makes clear why prospects should buy from you rather than your competition, whose ads may appear near yours.
4. A call to action. The ad should ask for a desired action so the reader will understand what they need to do to gain the benefits you offer. With no call to action there is no closing. And probably no sale.
5. Compelling visuals, laid out aesthetically to engage the eye and emotions, and reinforce the copy's sales message and your unique visual brand.
6. Only then the miscellaneous information -- your company name, contact information, store hours, location, etc.
Compare the 6 part selling message outline above to the multitude of boring ads that suffer from one or more classic weaknesses:
* Logo or business name dominates (displacing a captivating headline)
* Product line or services are listed (but not benefits)
* Hours of operation listed (but not differentiation from competitors)
* A stock slogan or unsupported claim is given (but no call to action)
* Too much reliance on visuals (if there's any copy it doesn't sell)
* Overcrowded layout (10 bewildering pounds in a 5 pound bag)
More readers will call you or visit you after an ad impression with a powerful selling proposition. You can and should prove this for yourself, as Claude Hopkins did. Get creative. Test and measure every ad you publish. Compare response. Do what works best. Approach ads scientifically and you'll enjoy great results.
Finding Gold With Strategic Advertising
You can publish keyed newspaper ads to test your selling propositions. When you discover composition and copy that sell, put those in your directory ads. This will relieve the impact of slow yearly cycles, which leave you stuck with with ads that may not work. Each year when the yellow pages rep calls, give them tested ads from the previous year's newspaper or direct mail campaigns. Then you'll be a lot more confident you're buying solid value for your long-run ad dollars.
Keep this up consistently and you may well discover ads that are pure gold. Some advertisers eventually develop stable messages that never change because they say exactly what a target market wants to hear. Their products sell like life boats at the sinking of the Titanic.
I'm assuming throughout this article that the media you buy reach your target audience with good coverage and penetration. Assuring that is the starting point for any ad campaign.
You may object that you are not a trained copy writer, so you lack confidence in using language to sell. In that case, don't try all this at home because you might hurt yourself.
The best strategy for developing effective ads is to find an expert, a professional specialist who knows how to sell in writing. Have them create copy that connects your product line to your target market's needs and wants, motivating prospects to contact you and buy from you. Then run your organized discovery campaign using your copy writer's compelling messages to find your golden ads.
You may object you can't afford a fancy advertising agency's copy writing fees. No sweat. Get a proposal from a commercial freelance writer who can demonstrate they do what you need. A freelance copy writer's fees will be irrelevant compared to the volume of new business you capture using what you just learned in this article.
You can qualify your prospective copy writer by quizzing them on what you learned here. But please don't tell them you got the inside scoop from me. Or I'll never hear the end of it from my peers.
Oh, I almost forgot. I promised to say how you can economize. That's easy. Just reduce your ad sizes and put the savings into in some great selling copy.

According to the National Health Service and media reports, over 4,500 incidents a year in the U.K. involve dogs and people, with children being the biggest victim group.. You are more likely to be bitten by a dog than win the lottery!
Media Plus
How to Keep Your Dog From Running Away Plus How to Build a Very Cosy (Free) Pet Bed
One incident is an unwelcome statistic but until you accept that your pet dog runs away because you let it these incidents are going to continue to occur. There are 5 basic steps, 4 big commands and 3 essential pieces of equipment which you need to learn how to use effectively to gain control and to build discipline into your dog. This guide explains how to do this and how to stop your dog running away. A collar and lead are working instruments of control, just the same as holding your child's hand. Mobile phones are another safety device we use with our children to maintain contact and for a much safer and secure environment. Our dogs are no less important and are at a higher statistical risk than our children. Your voice alone is not going to be enough. Whistling is hard work and it assumes your dog finds the whistle more compelling than what is at the end of its nose. You must start to appreciate that stopping your pet running away is a skill to be learned and developed on an on going basis, and like people, the input of patience and unconditional love, will very likely be paid back. The probability is that if your children are model children then your dog probably will be too, but that doesn't mean it is going to be easy to train, it just means you probably have the mindset and determination to keep your dog safe and disciplined. I admit this article may be a bit controversial but the techniques work and will not harm or hurt your dog. Neglect and ignorance is a much bigger killer. If you want to stop your dog running away there are 3 things your must achieve:
How to Keep Your Dog From Running Away Plus How to Build a Very Cosy (Free) Pet Bed
Instant response Your dog's whole and undivided attention Complete obedience
You need to understand that there are 3 reasons why your dog will run away:-
Sex Cruelty Owner mismanagement
All three of the reasons as stated above can get your dog killed or seriously injured. If you then overlay lack of success with the 3 disciplinary aspects you have serious issues to deal with and you need to correct this quickly or risk your dog causing death or serious injury. The end result will be the loss of your pet by lethal injection, gunshot or fatal injuries. If minors are involved and they are your own family it will destroy not only your life but that of your entire family. This is how I see it anyway and it is this that motivates me to get it right. Your pet running off is not to be taken lightly. I propose to examine a few simple helpful hints that might make your life more bearable and improve your relationship with the animal at a level you can both appreciate and work on to good effect. I am going to ignore the first two reasons that cause running away. If you need guidance to deal with them please give your dog to a loving home, this article is not for you. Your dog is born with senses which once engaged are so compelling that you pale into insignificance the minute they are engaged. You don't need to be a dog whisperer to understand this, but you can see it for yourself the minute you call your dog back. It is not a great moment when your dog embarrasses you for your inability to handle it. I think one year in a dog's life is about 6.5 of our years, so by the end of year one your dog should be starting to make out sounds, short sentence structures and words. The four most important commands in order are:
sit heal down stay
Dogs are quick learners. Not only do they know your mood, they take everything right to the edge all the time and they are also very persistent. The sooner you start teaching them the better, try to make it fun without finishing up with a fat dog. Remember your children should not be force fed a big McDonalds every time they get their table manners right and The National Hedgehog Road Skills award has never been won by a hedgehog. A lead is the equivalent of your child's hand. You communicate through it just the same way. You would not let your child pull you off your feet, especially on a main road, so use the same discipline with your dog.
Step 1. It is always your fault
I really don't think that Springer Spaniels with their long floppy ears can hear you properly over 30 metres away unless you really shout which makes you look in control doesn't it. When I was younger I had a liver and white springer 'Bramble'. He never knew to this day what hit him when he was busy rounding up sheep. I would have been able to play for the British Lions with a rugby tackle like that, the dog went flying, not in the least bit hurt, just caught in the act. He yelped just with fright, but never chased sheep again and after this incident if he could hear me he responded instantly to all the big 4 commands.
Step 2. How to stop your dog pulling you off your feet.
A sharp and very hard tug on the lead pulling your dog back behind you will do the trick. After the second or third time they will desist. This is obviously easier to do when your St. Bernard is a puppy, which is why i say start straight away. Bad habits are developed by the owners not the dogs. Never allow your dog to pull. Start by holding your dog's hand (the lead) and work firmly in a disciplined and in a fair way, and reward good performance and discipline and work on behaviour that falls short. Little and often is good and a routine is helpful. The thing that really gets results is patience. You would not take your child out into a distracting environment to teach them so don't do it to your dog either. Get the dog's attention and eye contact and progress will improve. If you are having trouble getting the dog's attention increase the treat value e.g. fillet steak. This is about hearts and minds and developing absolute trust. The time to use treats is at the outset of teaching the command. Once the dog understands what is required of it, a pat on the head and some encouraging words is sufficient.
Step 3. How to slow your dog down to your speed
How many of you would not hold on to your 6 year old child's hand in the city centre? Would you expect your six year old to speak fluent Russian? No, so don't expect your dog to understand what sounds the same to them. Use the lead to build confidence and lots of patience. By the time your dog is six months old they will be getting more biddable, more curious and more determined but up to the first year you can never be certain. However you are desperate to give your dog the freedom of that run about. A game keeper taught me a very good tactic called hobbling. Your dog's collar should always allow you to get three fingers under it, if you can't it is too tight. Simply stick your dog's front paw through the collar, it looks cruel, its not and you can catch a dog on three legs, it puts the odds in your favour, so you now have the opportunity to train your dog to stay close to you, or get it back safely. Don't use a retractable lead it encourages your dog to pull. Dogs on retractable leads are not properly trained (such a statement could be highly controversial but I would presume that those owners won't be reading this type of article so there won't be anyone to offend!)
Step 4. Timing - how long does it take to train my dog? I think 300 hours gets a basic job done before your dog will specialise into say rescue, field sports, or social human tasks like police or military work. It takes a good year to settle and train a dog. If you get the big 4 commands in quickly and early the dog will start to perform well but it will take at least a year so be patient and persist. Practice all the time - practice makes perfect. ( it also helps you lose weight!). I now have a black and white Springer Spaniel and she was terrible for running off. This was my fault. On dark evenings I only needed to get distracted for a second and the dog was gone. There I am in the dark and pouring rain, shouting my head off and the dog is in the next county. Twenty anxious minutes later I get a ball of mud back! Never be cross with a returning dog, it is after the fact and they may misinterpret you, causing trauma and confusion. Simply make a note to self to set up a training session in a controlled environment to fix the problem whilst kicking your own bottom and not the dogs!
Step 5. How to stop your dog running away
You spend hours and hours working with them, you teach the big 4 commands and when they are over six months old and really understand the commands then you have to bring discipline to bear or face the possibility of an unthinkable incident. I have tried whistles, chasing after her and just leaving her, none of which are satisfactory and just exposes the dog to danger. If I can't control the dog at both short and long range she is useless in the field other than as a pet. So how do I stop my pet from running away. A game keeper suggested an electric collar. I dismissed it out of hand as being cruel, but it is not as cruel as watching your dog in agony pinned down under a car wheel. I decided to try an electric collar but resolved to be kind and fair. It has transformed the dog without any cruelty at all and this is how it works: First and only after 6 months minimally, and only when the big 4 commands are in place can you use one. My collar has an audible alarm which the dog can hear even when she can't hear or see me. She quickly learned to respond to this bleep, it means only one thing 'Heal'. Since wild life has hearing and great vision too, we get to see lots of it when we are out now because we are quiet, the dog is under control at all times and above all is safe. Your dog and especially Springer Spaniels will want to do as you ask. You must be there at the time of any incident which demands attention or arresting and a bleeper really is on the spot and instant. If the dog doesn't respond there are 8 settings to 'tweak your dog's ear', building up to a shock. All of these are much gentler than rough handling or hitting the dog. All of them hurt a lot less than impact with an HGV. I must stress that if you don't have the big four commands in place and a confident dog you should not deploy such a device, just keep your dog on a lead. The collar is only for the dog's protection and control and the charge, which is about the same as a static shock from a door handle, does not cause the dog much discomfort, but it lets her know I want her attention when all else fails which is pretty rare these days. I don't know how the shepherds do it but they have my admiration. I don't need my little dog to achieve those levels. We have lots of fun together and she adores my two girls, mind you she adores everyone including the postman! I think that patience is the secret and then it's a matter of time.. She also has a special settee in our garden room (but never assumes this right in the house), and a dog house made out of straw bales which she loves as it is very warm. She also knows where the edge is, and pushes it like crazy, but she is safe and well behaved and under control at all times because she can hear me and every day that goes by her knowledge of language and disciplined procedure improves. I think I will always use an electric collar now, it is a safety device which makes me much less apprehensive about the dog's behaviour because I can focus on expanding the dog's comprehension of commands, so her behaviour continues to improve and she plays an even bigger and much more enjoyable part in day to day activities. If you don't want your pet to run off get to grips with the collar, lead, teaching, rewarding and discipline and be heard - the best way to do that quietly is with a bleeping collar - really it works. I think these new devices are the dog equivalent of a 2 way radio. No soldier goes into combat without one. I think they are here to stay and used responsibly will transform your life and make teaching your dog a real joy and with much less stress. Remember it is your finger on the button and you decide whether you are a dog trainer or a dog breaker - I know which I am.
How long does it take to teach your dog the big 4 Commands?
It takes about 20 minutes armed with some really 'must have' treats, and then repeat the training a day or so later for a few minutes until you see it work immediately. I use mackerel fillets but anything other than chocolate will do the trick. For every minute of training you need an hour of practice to get the command working consistently and then three or four times longer to get them all working together. You will pay for gaps in your routine and you will be able to notice when others have handled your dog. Dogs will always push to the limit to see what they can get away with so you have to be that limit and you can't always do that by being nice and feeding the dog treats. Never break your dog by cruelty and bullying to get the obedience you want, a broken dog does not work properly and anyone who has trained a dog will spot a broken dog a mile off, you can't hide it and you can't repair the damage.
A command should be instant, it is useless if it is not and may get you, your children, the dog or some poor unsuspecting motorist into an unthinkable situation, it is worth the effort.
Should you let the dog on the sofa - Training Versus Behaviour?
Oh boy is this a hot potato! Firstly your dog knows the difference between the scruffy couch in the playroom and the one in the living room but you may have to work more on the training. You can let your dog do anything you like provided you put the effort in with the ground rules, but here is a simple guide.
Your dog has two basic barks, one to warn and the other is more playful. Learn what they are and what they mean. If you don't want a yappy dog you will get the opportunity at about 10 months to sort it out.
Don't allow your dog to behave in a way that would be offensive to others, I am sure you don't need a list from me.
You can use a smack, a firm push or voice commands so long as it is immediate. If your dog is beyond reach you will need to either be very quick (voice and run) or use an electric collar. A sharp shock beats a fight or injury. If this is administered at the start of the action the dog is unlikely to repeat the offence. You won't break the dog doing this. Prolonged aggression or fierce punishment fills your dog with terror. I have heard them start to yelp before a blow is struck because they know what is coming. Could you do your job knowing someone is about to give you a good kicking? Neither can the dog. I have never seen a broken dog that didn't bring a lump to my throat and have me biting my lip to hold back the tears. Like the dog I suffer quietly in silence unable to speak.
Being a good dog owner and handler
Bad behaviour develops as a result of lack of effort or selfishness by the owner. Like your children the more patience and time you spend with them and effort you put into your dog, the more reward you can expect with a strong measure of devotion paid back. Like children they will pick up trauma between adults and they don't like it. Neglect will result in the dog making up its own rules and then you will need a dog psychologist to intervene. Unless the dog is ill and requiring 24 hour supervision, I would advocate they should have their own special place. A kennel is usually the best so they can have peace and quite to relax and dry/chill out and be themselves. You wouldn't normally have your children in bed with you, so I think it is a bit odd to have your pets there too. Lack of common sense is what develops poor animal behaviour. Plenty of exercise, good diet, discipline, routine, care and attention will work for your dog.
In summary, the three essential pieces of equipment required are a lead, a collar and an audible device that can be heard anywhere instantly by your dog which upon being heard recalls your dog to your side.. If a measure of force is required then this device should have the ability to administer it or be backed up by it.
How to Make a cosy dog bed for free - well almost
I think a great bed makes a very happy dog, especially if they have a full tummy
As an engineer, specialising in materials handling and storage, when it comes to a bed for the dog I wanted to create a cosy place for her to sleep. For several months I persevered with pet cushions etc but they just get filthy and are not very easy to clean or warm to sleep on outdoors. In winter this year we had two feet of snow, which the dog loved but it was cold for her and I wanted something better.
Pallets are often equipment you can pick up for free. Two or three of them are very simple to convert into a bed. 1000mm x 1200mm is a perfect size. If you have an outhouse, garage or shed they will fit easily inside. It doesn't matter if the dog chews them, the wood can be recycled or used for fire wood and if you use straw, the straw can be composted or burned. Now this solution is not for everyone but the dog will love it and you may grow to love it and here is why:
The straw helps clean the dog The dog can scrape and arrange the straw as it wants it The pallet and a few straw bales make a very cosy den Filled with straw your dog can live comfortably outside in all weathers Living outside is better for the dog Dogs will grow their natural seasonal coats in line with the climate. Inside they go into a state of permanent moulting, outside unheated they can live more naturally. The straw is cosy and warm the year round especially with the added protection of 380mm to 450mm of insulation on 6 sides The pallet keeps your dog off the cold floor - essential. Straw bales range from £1.75 to £3.50
Before you go into blind panic about scabies or mange, I have never had any trouble. However if you are worried ask your vet, I think you will find that the modern treatments keep them at bay anyway. Do watch out for nails and cardboard (stapled on). Plywood makes good tops if the wood is spaced or a bit rough and then the deep straw does the rest.
My dog really loves her straw bed and is quite happy to get into it and I rarely see her little black nose come round the edge of the bale until I call for her.
